It All Began With The Ladies
The Ladies Lincoln League was organized September 16, 1909 to promote and advance the civic and educational interests of the community of Hodgenville, Kentucky. The ladies promoted the educational progress of the community by organizing its first library, Lincoln Memorial Library, in March 1917. This first library occupied rented quarters above what is now the Lincoln Museum. Books were donated by local citizens and the library was staffed by league member volunteers. A special funding drive was instituted to purchase a complete set of encyclopedias, and in order to raise money for additional books, the league members sold miniature log cabins and other souvenirs at the Lincoln Birthplace.
In the 1930s, the library moved to a creek stone library that had been constructed by the Works Progress Administration. After a tax referendum was approved by voters in 1963, the LaRue County Public Library District was formed and in 1969 a new library building was constructed. The loyal ladies of the Lincoln League continued their support by providing funding for the new library’s draperies and landscaping.
There have been many dedicated members of the Ladies Lincoln League who have contributed labor, time, and money to ensure that the community had access to a library before one could be publicly-funded. Two particularly outstanding Ladies were Mrs. Hallie Miller LaRue, who left her estate to the Lincoln League, and Mrs. Ermine Pickerill Kirkpatrick, the library’s faithful librarian for many years.
Members of the League, continued their watchful interest in the library long after it became publicly-funded. Upon the dissolution of the League in 1982, the ladies voted to turn over their remaining assets of approximately $45,000, most of which came from the Hallie Miller LaRue estate, to the LaRue County Public Library District. These funds were eventually used to purchase the library’s bookmobile in 2011.
If they could return today, the Ladies of the Lincoln League would surely be proud to see their work so ably continued by the LaRue County Public Library staff and board members.
